An Indianapolis man recently stepped outside to get his mail — and ended up finding way more than he bargained for.
At 11:34 a.m. local time in Indiana on Monday, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department asked for the community’s help in locating a stolen 2013 Hyundai Sonata… which contained two babies under 6 months old inside. TERRIFYING. They wrote on X (Twitter):
“IMPD is seeking the community’s help in locating the following vehicle that was stolen with a 4-month-old and 5-month-old child in the back.”
Oh, no, they’re SO young!

They noted the rear window contained a “distinct sticker” that reads, “IN LOVING MEMORY OF COURTNEY NICOLE.” The PD also shared photos of the two baby girls who were kidnapped. See (below):

How scary. As of now, it’s not clear how the children were kidnapped or if they were left unattended in the vehicle prior to it being stolen. But by the universe’s good fortune, the babies were located just less than 30 minutes after the IMPD’s initial post! But not by cops — by an unsuspecting samaritan!
Local man Robert Deane spoke to USA Today the same day revealing he stepped outside of his house to check his mail and grab some packages when he noticed a peculiar sight in a nearby ditch: two car seats! He walked over to investigate and found the missing girls fighting to keep warm in the frosty temperatures, which were reportedly below freezing. 27 degrees to be exact!
Those poor baby girls!
Robert quickly dialed 911 to report his findings, and it turns out they were about four miles from where the vehicle was reported stolen. Innerestingly, a police officer found the vehicle at about the same time Robert called to report he found the infants.
The stolen vehicle has been located, and we can confirm the children have been located safe.
Thank you to the community and our local media partners for all cooperation and assistance!

Reflecting on the incident, Robert told USA Today:
“I’d do it again. If you see something, like a baby in a ditch, say something (and) do something.”
Thank goodness he was there! It’s not clear exactly how long they were outside in the cold, but it could have been a lot longer if it wasn’t for Robert. IMPD spokesperson William Young subsequently said in a statement:
“It’s cold out here. Who knows what could have happened if this particular individual was not able to come outside. It’s extremely cold, and we’re still in our early stages of trying to figure out who was responsible for this.”
He added:
“He did what any good person would do. He got those infants to shelter. This is an outcome that we wanted. I can’t thank that good Samaritan enough. We don’t have a suspect in custody, but that will be our next priority, figuring out who is responsible for this particular incident.”
We’re so glad the babies are safe!
