Maria Sharapova probably didn’t see herself falling from grace as we entered 2016, but in just three short months she’s already become the most controversial star in all of tennis!
As you may have heard, the 28-year-old Olympic silver medalist admitted to failing a drug test at the Australian Open this week, ruining her reputation as a top level athlete.

While most of her sponsors have already ended their business relationships with Maria, her peers are now starting to speak out about her scandal… and they don’t seem too forgiving.
Andy Murray spoke at a press conference during the BNP Paribas Masters on Thursday condemning Maria for cheating, saying:
“It’s not up to me to decide the punishment, but if you’re taking performance enhancing drugs and you fail a drugs test, you have to get suspended.
I think taking a prescription drug that you don’t necessarily need, but just because it’s legal, that’s wrong, clearly. That’s wrong. If you’re taking a prescription drug and you’re not using it for what that drug was meant for, then you don’t need it, so you’re just using it for the performance enhancing benefits that drug is giving you. And I don’t think that that’s right.”
Yikes!
And while that may seem harsh, fellow tennis superstar Chris Evert spoke to ESPN about why no other athletes are speaking out in her favor, saying:
“It’s hard to tell [what players think] because Maria Sharapova has always isolated herself from the rest of the tennis world, from the players. She doesn’t have a lot of close friendships on the tour.
She’s made that known, she can’t be friends with the players. Her friendships are outside of the tennis world, she’s isolated herself. So it’s hard. I’m not seeing a lot of support from a lot of the players.”
Damn!
It sounds to us like these people are happy they can now remove Maria from the sport for an actual reason other than her being unfriendly.
