Mark Rylance is mourning his wife.
What should have been a day of celebration for the Bridge of Spies star sadly turned into one of grief after his wife of 36 years Claire Van Kampen passed away on Saturday. Mark announced the news through People alongside Claire’s daughter Juliet, confirming the prolific English theatre director died on Saturday at 71 years old — the same day Mark celebrated his 65th birthday.
That’s so heartbreaking…

According to the Ready Player One star and Juliet, Claire passed in Kassel, Germany while “surrounded by family.” They told the outlet:
“Claire Louise van Kampen, Lady Rylance, has died this morning, Saturday the 18th of January at 11:47, in the ancient town of Kassel, Germany, surrounded by her family.”
She had apparently been diagnosed with cancer prior to her demise:
“Claire has died of cancer on Mark Rylance’s 65th Birthday. Her youngest daughter having died in 2012, she leaves her eldest daughter, Juliet Rylance, her two husbands, and countless beloved friends in England and America.”
She was described by the family as “one of the funniest and inspiring women we have ever known.” They added:
“We thank her for imbuing our lives with her magic, music, laughter, and love.”
So, so sad. Our hearts are with the Bones and All star and all Claire’s loved ones. Rest in peace.
