We recently heard that Matt Lauer was far from culpable in Ann Curry‘s dismissal from the Today show.
In fact, NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke even said Lauer offered to resign if it would mean helping the show! According to Burke, Matt said:
“If you think the show├óΓé¼Γäós better off without me, let me know, and I├óΓé¼Γäóll get out of the way.”
Doesn’t exactly sound like a pushy, selfish co-host to us! But did he really say it?
It looks like Burke had every reason to help Matt save face- 25 million reasons to be exact! He was directly involved in negotiating the host’s lucrative new four-year contract last year.
And since he was stuck paying the money anyway, was he just protecting his investment? Not to mention the fact that as CEO, Burke wasn’t exactly helpless when it came to saving Ann’s job!
Further, according to inside sources, Matt told Burke all about the article well before it was written- enough time for them to cook up this image of a magnanimous martyr who offered his own job to save Ann’s!
So what really happened? Only they know for sure, but we’re just not sure we’re buying this whole redemption angle. Not Today anyway.
