Matty Healy Just Shaded The Hell Out Of Taylor Swift's Songwriting!

Did Matty Healy Just Shade Taylor Swift's Songwriting?!?

If there is one thing you don’t come after Taylor Swift for, it’s her songwriting! But it appears Matty Healy did just that!

During an interview on the Doomscroll Podcast on Tuesday, the singer opened up about what fans can expect from The 1975‘s next album. And what he can tell everyone is you should not expect any songs about his “casual” relationship with Taylor! In other words, not like she did in The Tortured Poets Department! He said in the episode:

“I just naturally make melodically quite relatable music. So, my next record will be, hopefully, an enjoyable 1975 record, objectively. And it will be about what my records are always about — love, sex, death, communication, all the big things.”

But when it comes to telling his side of the story about his romance with the pop star? That’s clearly not “big” enough to write about! Instead, Matty explained the upcoming project was “born from me nearly going insane and that being a kind of internet-induced insanity.”

Perezcious readers mostly know what he’s referring to! The musician was thrust into the spotlight more when he began dating Taylor in May 2023, one month after her breakup with her boyfriend of six years, Joe Alwyn, was confirmed. However, they had a looong history together — one that started before she even met the London Boy! Swifties were not happy when the pair finally got together last year and made that very clear online. Why? Matty has displayed a lot of very problematic behavior in the past. We’re talking along the lines of sexism, homophobia, and more. Yikes.

All of that appeared to be a huge deal breaker for Tay as they were over a month after the romance reports dropped. The Grammy winner then channeled all her feelings about the relationship and breakup with Matty into her album TTPD, creating bangers like The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and Fortnight. However, you won’t see Matty and his band doing the same! And the reason he gave will have Swifties infuriated because he’s throwing a lot of shade at Tay and her songwriting!

On the podcast, Matty acknowledged he “became a way more well-known public figure for loads of different reasons” — including because of his relationship with the Wonderland artist. Yet he’s “not interested” in making a song about it… because it’s too “obvious” and basically boring. We’re not kidding. That’s his explanation. And while Matty does not mention Taylor by name, there’s no doubt the comments are mostly aimed at her! He said:

“I used to write about relationships a lot more and stuff like that. Maybe I’d be inclined to kind of reflect on my experience as a person, do you know what I mean? And more as an artist, but honestly, I would kind of just be lying. You know, if I made a record about all the stuff that was said about me or my casual romantic liaisons or whatever it may be that I’ve kind of become known for just because I was famous, I think that’s an obvious thing to draw from.”

OK, first off, his “casual romantic liaisons”? What a way to refer to Taylor Swift! Look, for as long as y’alls “casual” romance lasted — apparently over YEARS on and off — you probably shouldn’t play if off as if it was nothing! But far worse for an artist like Tay is calling her songwriting “obvious”!

And the dig did not end there! Matty continued:

“The idea of making a record about something that personally happened to me that, by the time I put it out, is gonna be, like, two years old — I see people doing that, as well, and it’s just not interesting.”

Say what! Some of the best songs in the world, including ones written by Taylor, have been about relationships — old ones and new ones! And btw, TPD is one of the biggest albums this year — so yeah, we would say many people found her romance and breakup tracks “interesting!”

Seriously. Would he say the same thing about Fleetwood Mac‘s hits???

Matty then noted he wants to create “interesting art pop” about “subjects that I’m really interested in,” which does not include most of his personal life:

“I’m sure there’ll be some kind of love songs on there. I think that yeah, I’m not in the world of, ‘Did you see what happened? Here’s my version of it,’ kind of thing. I think that’s for other artists to do.”

Woof. Sounds like some emotions may still be lingering there! We sense an upcoming part two to The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived! Watch the podcast interview (below):
