McDonald’s recently introduced a new dish called Fruit & Maple Oatmeal. There’s just one problem: It doesn’t actually contain any maple.
The Vermont Agency of Agriculture (VAA) called out McDonald’s on their mislabling, which is a violation of Vermont’s strict “maple law.” They will likely force McDonald’s to change the labeling or add maple.
Said Kelly Loftus, VAA spokesperson:
“What we understand, is there is no actual maple in the [McDonald’s] product being advertised. Vermont maple law and regulations are very specific for how the term maple is used in advertisements. It is illegal to use the word maple on a product unless the sweetener is 100 percent pure maple. Artificial maple flavoring should be clearly and conspicuously labeled on the principle panel with the term ‘artificial flavor’.”
McDonald’s is currently discussing the issue with Vermont to make sure they meet standards.
How about not taking shortcuts in your meals, McDonald’s?! Use the real thing instead of fake substitutes!
