Sad.
It’s unclear to what extent their joke phone call contributed to Jacintha Saldanha‘s decision to kill herself, but the 2Day FM DJs behind the Royal prank agreed to decline comment and, for now, quit their show.
The station owners released a statement regarding the whole, frustratingly tragic ordeal and the fates Australian DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian.
It reads:
“Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of the nurse, Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward V11 Hospital and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family, and all that have been affected by this situation around the world.
CEO Rhys Holleran has spoken with the presenters, they are both deeply shocked, and at this time we have agreed that they not comment about the circumstances.”
SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show, until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy.”
As we previously reported, the DJs’ Twitter accounts were quickly suspended in the wake of the terrible fallout from the Kate Middleton prank and the hateful messages being sent their way.
In light of SCA silencing the DJs, those deleted accounts make even more sense.
Should Mel or Mike decide to tell their side of the story or share their thoughts, we will surely let you know.
In the meanwhile, our thoughts remain with Jacintha’s loved ones.
