Met Gala fashion is about to get VERY familiar!
And after a major controversy forced organizers to scrap their original plans, the 2027 event is taking inspiration from something you probably have in your closet right now!
According to Vogue, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute announced Thursday that its new exhibition and Met Gala theme will be “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.” Yep, we’re talking JEANS and T-SHIRTS!

As Vogue explained in their post:
“[The exhibition] will be devoted to the undersung beauty and allure of quotidian garments — think the aforementioned t-shirts and jeans, plus raincoats, sweatshirts, puffer jackets, and more.”
But don’t expect celebrities to just roll up in their favorite sweatpants! The idea is to examine how designers turn ordinary clothes into something spectacular.
Oooh!
Vogue elaborated:
“It will ask visitors ‘to see the everyday anew,’ says Bolton, and come at its subject from two perspectives: First, exploring how designers have reinvented and elevated archetypal garments to runway-worthy creations and then, secondly, highlight how humble, even ‘disposable’ materials — like paper, aluminum, and plastic — are transformed into wearable art.”
Of course, the switch comes after the museum canceled its planned John Galliano retrospective, “John Galliano: Horizons,” back in August.
The announcement had triggered backlash over the designer’s history of antisemitic and racist remarks, including incidents that led to his 2011 hate-crime conviction in France.
Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton told Vogue the team didn’t have a backup plan. Still, he was determined that the replacement stand on its own:
“It was really important to come up with an exhibition that wasn’t just a masterwork show or something that we could do a little bit more easily. That was really important to me: to come up with an idea that wasn’t a substitute. And it had to have some sort of contemporary resonance.”
New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin also welcomed this brand-new change now this week, saying:
“I am pleased that the Metropolitan Museum has chosen an inclusive new theme that celebrates the artistry and creativity of the fashion industry. The original plan to honor John Galliano, after his horrific record of antisemitism and hate, was a divisive choice and antithetical to the values of our city.”
FYI, the Met Gala is set for May 3, 2027, and the exhibition opens May 9, running through January 9, 2028. The official red-carpet dress code hasn’t been announced yet.
So… will Hollywood’s biggest stars somehow turn a basic white tee into a six-figure fashion moment? We can’t wait to see!
What about U??
