Leave it to a few bad apples to spoil a beautiful situation!
This weekend, Michael Sam became the first openly gay athlete to be drafted into the NFL when he was selected by the St. Louis Rams, and he celebrated the landmark moment by sharing a smooch with his boyfriend Vito Cammisano!
Unfortunately, not everyone was happy with the emotional moment as Miami Dolphins defensive back Don Jones sent out tweets that read “OMG” and “horrible” immediately after the kiss!
Considering the franchise was JUST hit with a bullying scandal this past season, they were obviously not happy with Don’s reaction and acted quickly, fining him an undisclosed amount and suspending him until he completes sensitivity training!
He released an apology for his offensive remarks, saying:
“I want to apologize to Michael Sam for the inappropriate comments that I made last night on social media. I take full responsibility for them and I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment. I remember last year when I was drafted in the seventh round and all of the emotions and happiness I felt when I received the call that gave me an opportunity to play for an NFL team and I wish him all the best in his NFL career.”
Sadly, Don wasn’t alone as University of Mississippi basketball player Marshall Henderson also took to Twitter to share some nasty remarks, writing:
Boycotting sportscenter til this michael sam nasty ass shit is off …. My brothers are 7 and 11 and saw that!!! #SICKENING

Im sorry, but I DO NOT AGREE WHATSOEVER that should be shown to where innocent eyes can see!!!

Now this is where things get pretty strange. Marshall is bakctracking BIG TIME after getting tons of negative response, but he says that’s EXACTLY what he wanted!
In fact, he says the only reason he sent up the tweets in the first place was for a psychology experiment that was being done by his friend, who just so happens to be gay! What were they studying? We have no clue, but that’s his story and he’s sticking to it!
He went on to say:
One of my best friends, WHO IS GAY, is about to graduate in psychology, asked me to say these things so he can have responses … TBC

The point of his study was to see how people react when others say things or act a certain way against another group of people … TBC

He chose gays because of how he relates to it and has to live it EVERYDAY of his life … He asked me because he knew I would get incredible

Feedback, and OMG how crazy you people are lol … It is absolutely amazing to see what people have said, whether agreeing or disagreeing
— marshall henderson (@NativeFlash22) May 12, 2014
As far as what I said, Totally was 100% for the project … as far as my ACTUAL views – its irrelevant because its gonna happen regardless!

Ah, yes! The good ole’ “My gay buddy asked me to tweet some homophobic remarks to see what kind of response I’d get” excuse!
If we had a nickel for every time we heard that one, well, we probably couldn’t even buy a stick of gum with our earnings!
It’s 2014, people! Get with the program!
