This is too bad, but we hope he gets the help he needs!
Michael Sam, who made history last year as the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL, is now calling it quits on pursuing a football career — at least for now.

The 25-year-old announced the news on Twitter on Friday afternoon, writing a series of tweets explaining his decision (below):
The last 12 months have been very difficult for me, to the point where I became concerned with my mental health. Because of this I am 1/3

going to step away from the game at this time. I thank the Alouettes for this opportunity and hope to be back on the field soon. Thank 2/3

you all for your understanding and support. 3/3

Earlier this summer, Sam had signed a contract with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, but stepped away from that team at one point during the season, too.
It’s been a tough year for Sam, who also broke off his engagement with his longtime boyfriend, as well.
Sad to see a pioneer like Sam quit the sport he loves, but if he believes it’s in the best interest of his overall health, all we can do is support him!
