Michigan Man Who Murdered His Entire Family (Including Pets!) Was Allegedly Having An Affair With An Intern

New details are emerging about what life had been like before Kristopher Karolkiewicz allegedly killed his wife, Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, their six children, and their pets in a murder-suicide this month.

As we previously reported, the entire family was found dead inside their Grand Haven Township home in Michigan on Friday morning after firefighters responded to reports of white smoke coming from the property. As investigators would soon discover, however, they didn’t die from a fire. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office revealed they think Kristopher shot and killed Amanda and the kids before setting the house on fire, which resulted in their pets dying from smoke inhalation, and he then died by suicide. A motive for the murder has not been publicly revealed, but we are now learning that the couple’s marriage hadn’t been smooth sailing before the tragedy.

According to the Holland Sentinel, Mandy opened up about her relationship with Kristopher on Reddit under the username “MandyK1179” — including the good, the bad, and the ugly. She explained in a 2024 post that she grew up in Detroit but now lived in a “small beach town in West Michigan” that was like “living in a Hallmark Movie.” But her life wasn’t always like one…

In another post from that same year, Mandy recalled meeting Kristopher while working as an intern. A decade later, they are married with kids, and she discovered he cheated on her with another intern:

“He was divorced and older than me … fast forward ten years and five kids, he was cheating with the intern again — the same age I was when I was the intern. After about a year of self-loathing, I remember crying and looking at myself in the mirror and realizing how [expletive] it was that I was the one who was living so miserably because of what he did. I finally realized that I had been the only person who has ever showed up for myself my whole entire life.”

Mandy shared that she only decided to work on their marriage despite the affair because they had children together:

“I kept telling myself, ‘I love my kids more than I hate my husband right now.’ They have no idea — I faked it ’till we made it. We’re in a much better place 4.5 years out, but it’s still a fight to stay in a healthy place.”

Oof…

Mandy continued to open up about her rocky marriage in the subreddit, “As One After Infidelity,” a support group for reconciliation after cheating. Calling out Kristopher’s “red flags,” she wrote:

“We have six kids, so the idea of leaving is insanely terrifying. He’s always had major red flags that I ignored due to my own trauma and anxious attachment. He was raised in a toxic family dynamic that encouraged lying about everything.”

Mandy then said she encouraged them to go to independent counseling and marriage counseling to work through their problems after she caught him cheating, adding:

“It’s all so confusing, because our day-to-day lives and dynamics are truly good, until every so often now when he pulls sneaky [expletive].”

The mom revealed she once shoved Kristopher after learning he had an “emotional” affair — and has no regrets about it:

“I don’t feel bad still. He towers over me and destroyed me mentally. It felt like I was being assaulted and needed to fight back. I think it’s a fight or flight thing.”

And although Mandy decided to stay with him, she admitted she still felt “triggered” and unsafe in their marriage:

“For me, ‘safety’ is the ability to trust that [he] will not get angry or defensive when I’m triggered, and will help to carry me through it. We’re almost five years out, and he’s trying, but still struggles with defensiveness. But in general, am I happy? Yes. I wouldn’t say I feel safety in my emotions, because he still struggles with receiving my triggers without defensiveness, and that’s slowing down my ability to regain feelings of safety.”

That is all heartbreaking to hear…

Mandy went on to say in another post that Kristopher “was having trouble sleeping and was so angry and mad at himself because the counselor asked him if he heard me.” Because of his strong reaction to getting called out, she wasn’t sure they’ll ever get to a good place in their relationship again:

“It seems like such a big reaction to that pretty normal question from a marriage counselor. He is so sensitive to correction that I’m feeling so discouraged that we’ll ever be able to make progress.”

And what didn’t help matters is that Mandy was struggling to take care of six children:

“I was adamant that five kids was my max, then I was unexpectedly pregnant. I was finally about to go back to work because all my older five were in school, then we had to start over. I am stretched way too thin, and am often on the brink. I have had to ask for so much help this time around.”

Sadly, Mandy and her kids lost their lives two years after these posts. We don’t know what led Kristopher to commit such a horrible crime, but it is clear the pair didn’t have a good marriage leading up to this. Reactions, Perezcious readers? Let us know in the comments (below).
