Performing Arts teacher Sue Johnson was suspended for three days for playing a music video for her class.
Was it a video that glorified violence? Showed nudity? Was it full of graphic language?
Nope- it supported marriage equality.
Ch-ch-check out the video (above) for Same Love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis to see every controversial moment!
Ms. Johnson chose the video as a performing arts piece to discuss at a student’s suggestion. She says:
“I asked him if there were any swear words, any violence. He told me ‘no’ and I said we could go ahead.
The little boy who brought it was so engaged. One boy raised his hand and said he had an uncle who was gay. Another girl said her aunts were.”
Sounds like the video inspired the exact discussion it should have!
But the administration was not happy about it! The principal suspended Ms. Johnson, citing the political and religious stances the song takes!
Later the Superintendent claimed the suspension was due to the fact that she failed to fill out the proper paperwork and not the content.
If that’s true, why did they “discuss” the content with her?
We think someone just realized that they punished a teacher for showing a message of love and acceptance- and that it made them look like big homophobic jerks!
