As we all should expect, in the aftermath of yesterday’s Capitol Hill scare — where a 34-year-old mother was gunned down by police officers after leading them on a reckless chase — people are looking for answers. They’re looking for reasons as to why a seemingly normal mother and ‘always happy’ dental hygienist from Connecticut would do something like this.
The latest report might have an insight, and it’s an explanation for that affects a whole lot of people at any given time:
Post-Partum depression.
Also known as the baby-blues, PP mostly affects mothers, but can actually affect fathers as well. In this case, Miriam Carey was believed to have been suffering from a severe form of it, as her 1-year-old was actually in the car at the time of the incident that ended Miriam’s life.
This reveal has come from Miriam’s own mother.
Here’s what Idella Carey said about after the newborn arrived last August:
“A few months later, she got sick. She was depressed. … She was hospitalized. I would never in a million years believe that she would do something like this. It’s the furthest thing from anything I would think she would do, especially with her child in the car. I am floored that it would be her.”
Miriam also has no history of violence, according to the mother, and nobody knows why she was even in Washington on Thursday — she had thought Miriam was taking the baby to a doctor’s appointment in Connecticut.
Ugh, this is SO awful. We’re terrified for this woman’s child, and we wish the world knew more about post-partum depression and it’s long-lasting effects. It isn’t just something you can shake yourself out of — it’s a REAL and dangerous form of depression!
It effects so may people (luckily not this extreme), and yet it isn’t talked about nearly as much as it should be.
Our hearts go out to the little girl and Miriam’s family… and to the officers that put their lives in harms way.
