Last night, Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America and was the first winner of Indian-American decent!
But while the landmark victory should have been an occasion for celebration, it was instead met with a slew of racist tweets.
Moments after Nina was awarded, tons of angry viewers took to Twitter to air their frustration, and they all had one belief in common: Miss America should have to be from America.
But here’s the thing, Nina Davuluri is from America. Born in Syracuse, she is the the second Miss New York to take home the crown in the last two years. However, people seemed too preoccupied on the color of her skin to pay attention to the facts.
Being the class act she is, Miss America responded to the criticism and proved just why she’s so deserving of her title:
“I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American… I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.”
Amen, sister!!!
It’s disappointing to see that people are still so quick to jump to such negative conclusions simply based on the color of someone’s skin, especially since it’s 2013 people!!
We’re soo happy for Nina Davuluri for her victory, and hopefully the haters learn to live with the fact that this is what America looks like!
