Some cold cases only get colder as the years go on… but for one missing Arizona resident, things just reached a boiling point.
32 years ago, 13-year-old Star Valley girl Christina Marie Plante vanished, never to be seen again — or so what many might have believed. On Wednesday, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office announced in an unexpected statement that Christina, now 44, has been located SAFE:
“Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd would like to release the following information on Cold Case Missing Person from Star Valley, Arizona in 1994. The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is announcing the successful resolution of a decades-old missing person case that began in May 1994, when 13-year-old Christina Marie Plante disappeared from Star Valley, Arizona.”

What?! The statement continued:
“Christina was reported missing after she vanished without a trace from her community. At the time of her disappearance, extensive search efforts were conducted involving local law enforcement, volunteers, and regional resources. Despite exhaustive ground searches, interviews, and investigative follow-up, no visible leads were developed. Christina was entered into national missing children databases, and missing person flyers were distributed locally, statewide, and in other major parts of the country.”
However, hours turned to days, days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months, months turned to years, and years turned to decades… and no answers were found despite ongoing investigations:
“Over the years, the case remained open and active, with investigators periodically re-examining evidence and pursuing new information as it became available.”
But it wasn’t until the formation of a new cold case unit that a “breakthrough” was made due to advancements in technology:
“The formation of the Gila County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit marked a renewed commitment to unresolved investigations. Utilizing advances in technology, modern investigative techniques, and detailed case review, detectives developed new leads that ultimately led to a breakthrough. After 32 years, Christina Marie Plante has been located alive. Investigators confirmed her identity, and her status as a missing person has been officially resolved.”
That’s INSANE! The statement continued:
“The case underscores the importance of cold case review initiatives and the impact of evoking technology in bringing long-awaited answers to families and communities. The Sheriff’s Office extends its gratitude to the investigators, analysts, partner agencies, and community members who contributed to keeping this case active over the decades.”
As of now, it’s not readily clear exactly what methods were used to locate Christina, or where she was found:
“Out of respect for Christina’s privacy and well-being, additional details will not be released at this time. The Gila County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to pursuing all unresolved cases and encourages anyone with information regarding other cold cases to come forward.”
A missing person flier shared on the GCSO’s Facebook detailed Christina left home the day of her disappearance to walk to a nearby stable where her horse was — but she never returned home.
How WILD is this, Perezcious readers?? We’re so glad she was safely located after all these years.
What are your reactions??
