This is an absolutely heartbreaking example of a bright star that never got a chance to shine to its full potential.
22-year-old Oscar Taveras, regarded as one of the top prospects in MLB, tragically died on Sunday after a fatal car accident in his home of the Dominican Republic.
The St. Louis Cardinals outfielder was reportedly driving on the highway with his 18-year-old girlfriend Edilia Arvelo when he lost control of his car and drove off the road. Edilia also died in the crash.
Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak spoke out about the sad news, saying:
“I simply can’t believe it. I first met Oscar when he was 16 years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.”
Oscar made his major league debut this season and made an immediate impact, hitting a home run in his very first game. He was considered by some to be an essential part of the Cardinals’ future.
It’s always sad and disappointing to see someone taken from us so young, especially when they still had so much left to accomplish. Our hearts and prayers go out to Oscar and Edilia’s family at this difficult time.
