A little-known fact about the 1986 John Hughes classic Pretty In Pink is that in the original ending, Molly Ringwald‘s character Andie falls for her friend Duckie, played by Jon Cryer, instead of Andrew McCarthy‘s Blane, but test audiences responded to it so negatively that the director went back and altered it to the one we all know and love today!
However, the actress recently opened up about why that decision was the right one, and that’s because she believes that the character would have gone on to realize that he and his beloved may have a little bit TOO much in common!
She explains:
“Duckie doesn├óΓé¼Γäót know he├óΓé¼Γäós gay. I think he loves Andie in the way that [my gay best friend] always loved me. That ending fell so flat — it bombed at all the screenings. I didn├óΓé¼Γäót realize it then — I just knew that my character shouldn├óΓé¼Γäót end up with him, because we didn├óΓé¼Γäót have that sort of chemistry. If Jon was here now, and I could talk to him, I think that he would completely acknowledge that.├óΓé¼┬¥
Except…he didn’t!
That’s right, Jon maintains:
“Yes, she said that the guy whom Duckie was based on was gay. It’s a different thing. Let’s be clear here. No, she actually said that if one projected beyond the movie, that Duckie would be out by now. And I respectfully disagree. I want to stand up for all the slightly effeminate dorks that are actually heterosexual. Just cause the gaydar is going off, doesn’t mean your instruments aren’t faulty. I’ve had to live with that, and that’s okay.”
Thankfully, he’s just a fictional character, so we guess it ultimately doesn’t matter whatsoever!
But still, it’s inneresting to hear how those directly involved interpret the parts which they so famously portrayed even after all these years!
What do U think?? Was Duckie gay or straight??
