The Crown Producers Admit Claire Foy Was Paid Less Than Her On-Screen Husband Matt Smith!

No one gets paid more than The Queen… except for The Doctor.
During an INTV conference panel on Tuesday, producers of Netflix‘s The Crown admitted that series lead Claire Foy was paid less than Matt Smith, the Prince Phillip to her Queen Elizabeth II.

Foy received a reported $40,000 per episode for her award winning portrayal of the royal, while Smith’s salary for playing her husband is unreported.
Producers attributed Smith’s higher salary to his fame as the title character of Doctor Who, but reassured the audience that her majesty gets a rightful paycheck in the future. Exec Suzanne Mackie quipped:

“Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen.”

Good! Though not the best timing for Foy — as The Crown is recasting almost its entire lineup of actors for seasons three and four, which take place in a later decade.
But it is good news for Olivia Colman, who will step in as the (appropriately paid) Queen. Smith’s replacement has yet to be named.
