A New Jersey postal worker made a deeply unsettling discovery on Friday morning — and what police found after responding to the scene was even more horrifying.

According to the New York Post and TMZ, three elderly people were found dead inside a home in Mount Holly, New Jersey, after a postal worker spotted a bizarre note taped to the front door.

The message read “9-1-1 Inside” and featured two disturbing drawings of unhappy faces with X’s where their eyes should have been. The note was reportedly secured to the door with a significant amount of tape.

Concerned by the message, the postal worker alerted authorities, who rushed to the residence. Once inside, officers made the devastating discovery of three dead bodies. And the scene was apparently gruesome. One neighbor told the Post that police indicated there was a significant amount of blood inside the home.

At this point, investigators have not publicly identified the victims or revealed how they died. Autopsies are scheduled to take place over the weekend.

Nevertheless, neighbor David Babcock told NBC10 News that two brothers and a sister, believed to be in their 60s, lived at the residence. However, authorities have NOT confirmed whether those individuals are the deceased.

Babcock remembered the residents fondly, saying:

“They were very nice, they didn’t bother anybody.”

Another neighbor told the Post she had only ever noticed one man coming and going from the property:

“As far as I knew, I would’ve guessed that he was the only one living there.”

Meanwhile, Mount Holly Police Chief Clifford Spencer addressed the tragedy in a statement shared on Facebook:

“I understand that an incident of this nature is deeply concerning to our community. As your Chief of Police, I want to assure you that the safety and security of our residents remain my highest priority. … My thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident.”

Authorities have assured residents there is no ongoing danger to the public.
