New Moon Director To The Piracy Rescue!

We told you last week about the young Twilight fan that was arrested at a Chicago movie theater for allegedly videotaping the flick, New Moon, with her digital camera.

The girl, Samantha Tumpach, insists that she wasn’t and the footage found on her camera, which includes ads as well as film footage, has her talking over it in conversation with someone else. Still, Samantha was put in jail for two days awaiting a bond hearing and now awaits her trial next week as she is facing a felony charge.

This news has reached the ears of the film’s director, Chris Weitz, who is just as flabbergasted as we are that this thing has become such a big deal. In response to her ordeal, he has contacted the studio, Summit Entertainment, to see what they can do to help her. In an email, he writes:

├óΓé¼┼ôNeedless to say, the case seems to me terribly unfair and I would like to do what I can to address this…There is, needless to say, a difference between trying to protect the copyright of a film and making an unfair example of someone who clearly seems not to have any intentions towards video piracy.”

Of course, he acknowledges that since he doesn’t own the film, he doesn’t have much power himself, but he is hoping that his pull with the studio may be enough to help the girl.

Let’s hope the studio mans up and helps out someone who helped put MILLION$ into their pockets!
