Nick Cannon is opening up about the insecurities he felt while being married to Mariah Carey.
It takes a certain type of person to be married to one of the biggest stars in the world. Whoever you may be, you’re going to live in the shadow of that person. And for some people that works! But for the Wild ‘n Out host, it ended up creating a BIG insecurity.

During a conversation on the Ray Daniels Presents podcast last week, the 44-year-old opened up about why his marriage with the Obsessed singer didn’t end up working out. And spoiler alert: it’s because he felt challenged by her “alpha” energy.
He dished:
“I didn’t actually really care what the world thought … But going to myself, that pressure of, ‘Who am I?’ I got married in my 20s to the biggest star in the world. And my trajectory was [down] here and hers was already in a different stratosphere, so I would lay up at night thinking, ‘Is this who I am? Am I Mariah’s man? Is that what my life is supposed to be?’ There’s nothing wrong with it, and I got really comfortable [with] it — she got islands and I’m waking up at noon and people bringing me steaks on a platter, but I’m like this ain’t the hustler. And then when you have children and the hierarchy of your man s**t is like, wait, I’m carrying the purse, the diaper bag, and I’m standing on the corner [while] she’s rocking being the alpha that she is.”
Sounds like a pretty fantastic life, TBH! But not one Nick ultimately wanted for himself. He went on to say that Mariah absolutely deserves someone who can offer her that sort of treatment, but that he’s just “not that dude.” But his insecurities never became contentious for the pair. He explained:
“Her and I never had problems. Never argued, even with me struggling in this space, she’s so understanding, and so evolved, and lives in her own world. That’s the thing, when someone lives in their own world … and you gotta be a participant in that.”
But that didn’t work for the Masked Singer host because HE wanted to be the “main character.” He continued:
“I was getting mad at myself, it was like muscle atrophy. I had a gut. It was like I’m not being the dude that God put me on this earth to be, and I was attempting to be the best husband I could be. She deserved it [and] the love kept me there … You need somebody, you need a support system. You need somebody that don’t want you for your money, you need somebody that’s sincere, you need somebody that’s willing to build a family and raise some amazing kids together, and that was my goal, but then there was just something constantly in me.”
Wow!

The pair got hitched in 2008 and welcomed twins Moroccan and Monroe in 2011. But they split three years later in 2014, and then officially finalized their divorce in 2016. And of course, Nick has gone on to welcome ten (!) more kids with several different women in the time since.
