Nicki Minaj Faces Backlash For Using Rosa Parks' Name On Upcoming Song 'Yikes'

Nicki Minaj is under fire after using an insensitive rap lyric about Rosa Parks.

Nicki Minaj has brand new music coming out very soon, but is the world ready to hear it?

On Tuesday, the rapper shared a preview of her upcoming track called Yikes to Instagram with the intention of getting fans hyped for its full release. However, the clip immediately faced backlash from listeners who weren’t a fan of the Pinkprint artist using the legendary Rosa Parks’ name in the song.

In the snippet (below), Minaj is seen turning up at the studio and passionately reciting the lyrics to her unreleased record while her husband Kenneth Petty appears to support her in the background.

Give it a listen and keep an ear out for the line in question, which goes as follows:

“All you bitches Rosa Parks / Uh oh, get your ass up.”

As most people are likely aware, Nicki is referencing the legendary Civil Rights activist who refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955.

Shortly after the video went up, people took to Twitter to air their opinions on it! While some expressed support for the single and found the controversial lyric humorous, many fans were upset the 37-year-old name-dropped Parks on the track and shared it on what would’ve been the late advocate’s 107th birthday. It’s also worth pointing out that February is Black History Month when prominent Black historical figures and their contributions to society are usually celebrated.

All we can say at this point is YIKES!

For the record, TMZ caught up with Nicki’s team and they insisted she meant no disrespect to Parks with that line. Instead, Meek Mill‘s ex-girlfriend thought it was another one of her clever metaphors aimed at her haters and was not intended to be offensive at all!

The fact that Minaj shared it on Parks’ birthday just happened to be bad timing, according to the outlet’s sources. Apparently, the Anaconda rapper was just too excited to get her tunes out and hopes her fans can live with this big misunderstanding.

Some people did find the lyric funny and even created memes that suggested Rosa Parks would find the shoutout amusing if she were alive. But as we mentioned earlier, most were pissed about it!

One fan was quick to point out a factual inaccuracy in the line:

“Today is February 4th. Rosa Parks would have been 107 years old if she was still living to see her birthday today. Y’all go remind Nicki Minaj that. Quick history lesson: She never got up, she stayed seated. The lyric makes no sense.”

For what it’s worth, Nicki has literally compared herself to Harriet Tubman before on her Queen radio show, so, should we really be this concerned with this new reference?

What do U think, Perezcious readers? Do U find the lyric offensive??
