Being married to Tom Cruise had its perks.
For Nicole Kidman, it was apparently a level of protection against sexual harassment during her younger years in Hollywood.
The Boy Erased actress opened up about her decade-long marriage to Cruise in an essay for New York magazine, admitting that being married to the powerful actor kept her “cocooned” from the unsavory side of the business.

But before she got to the juicy stuff, Kidman felt the need to remind readers that she’s very much in love with current husband Keith Urban, writing:
“Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I’m always reluctant to talk about, because I’m married now to the man who is my great love [Keith Urban], and it almost feels disrespectful.”
Yeah, yeah. After getting that disclaimer out of the way, she continued:
“That said, I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me — it was protection.I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned. So when I came out of it at 32, 33, it’s almost like I had to grow up.”

After splitting up with the actor in 2001, the 51-year-old said she went on to experience her “share of #MeToo moments” — as well as other types of trauma not even Cruise could protect her from:
“But do I want to expose them in an article? No. Do they come out in my work? Absolutely. I’m open and raw. I want to have my well of experience and emotion tapped into — used, and I’m not just talking about sexual harassment. I’m talking about loss, death, the full array of life. But it has to be by the right people so it’s not abused again.”
Kidman suffered multiple miscarriages during her marriage to Cruise. She was just 23 when she had an ectopic pregnancy, and suffered another miscarriage around the time he filed for divorce.
They ended up adopting two kids, 25-year-old Isabella and 23-year-old Connor, both of whom reportedly have an estranged relationship with the actress.
