35-year-old nursing student Alonga Pereira got quite the surprise as she was on her way to the library to study. As she was walking by a Nissan sedan, she noticed several hysterical men and her scrambling around the car. Then she noticed her pregnant upstairs neighbor in the back of the car.
She spoke of the experience:
“I realized ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ whoa ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ she├óΓé¼Γäós having the baby in the back seat of the car. “I├óΓé¼Γäóm really just happy that I did OB (obstetrics) last semester. But that didn├óΓé¼Γäót take the nervousness away.”
Pereira grabbed a clean towel and guided the birth with the head and shoulders of the baby girl.
She adds:
“The only concern was I had to suction out the nose and mouth so she didn├óΓé¼Γäót choke. So I put the baby├óΓé¼Γäós head to the side so the fluid could drain out.”
Paramedics eventually arrived around midway and took over the rest delivery, before taking mother and child to Methodist Hospital.
“I just have to stop by my professor├óΓé¼Γäós office and thank her,” said Pereira, adding:
“It├óΓé¼Γäós safe when you├óΓé¼Γäóre in the hospital you feel so comfortable, but when its you, when you are in the backseat of the car and there is no one to back you up, it├óΓé¼Γäós nerve-wracking. I was so happy when the EMS arrived.”
Way to take action! Your nursing teachers should all be very proud of you. You most likely saved the lives of that mother and child.
