We’re not sure whether OKCupid CEO Sam Yagan literally lives in a glass house or not but he definitely just threw a stone that he shouldn’t have!
It was last week that his dating site shut down access to anyone trying to log in using Firefox!
The reason: the web browser’s parent company Mozilla was co-founded by a man named Brendan Eich who back in 2008 donated to the campaign trying to pass Prop 8 and effectively ban same-sex marriage in California!
OKCupid looked like they were standing up for gay rights with the move and gained attention around the world because of it.
But here’s the thing…
Head honcho Sam Yagan has contributed to anti-gay causes too!
Yagan has donated money to right-wing politicians, specifically former Utah Representative Chris Cannon.
As you might have guessed, Congressman Cannon isn’t exactly a fan of equal rights. During his time in the House, he voted FOR a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, AGAINST a ban on sexual-orientation based job discrimination, and FOR prohibition of gay adoptions!
Cannon also voted for several anti-choice measures, including laws that aimed at stopping minors from crossing state lines to obtain an abortion and banning family planning funding in US aid abroad.
Yagan’s financial contributions to Cannon were small (only $500) and were given 10 years ago. Mr. Yagan also donated to President Obama’s campaign twice in 2007 and 2008.
But that doesn’t erase the truth of where his money has also gone; something conveniently left out of OKCupid’s act of protest against Firefox that to us smells more like a PR stunt than anything!
We guess the lesson that both Yagan and Eich can learn from this is, be careful who or what you donate to. It might come back to haunt you!
