OMG! This is not the reaction anyone expected from this bronze medal winner!
On Tuesday, Norwegian Olympian Sturla Holm Lægreid broke down in tears on live TV in an interview with NRK after he took home the bronze medal in the men’s 20km biathlon at the 2026 Winter Olympics. He told the outlet the moment was bittersweet:
“There is someone I wanted to share this with who might not be watching today.”
That someone is a woman he described as “the most beautiful and kindest person in the world” — who he’d cheated on! He called it “the biggest mistake of my life.” He said he told her about the affair about a week prior, and that he was having “the worst week of my life.” Oof. The 28-year-old detailed:
“I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her. I try to be a good role model, and I did something stupid. You have to admit when you do something you can’t stand for and hurt someone you love so much.”

At a press conference shortly after, he acknowledged he’s not sure it was “the right choice or not, but it was the choice I made” when going public with his personal life, adding:
“Today I made the choice to tell the world what I did, so maybe, maybe there is a chance that she will see what she really means to me. And maybe not, but I don’t want to think I didn’t try everything to get her back.”

Did it work??
Welp, not at all!
His ex-girlfriend, who wanted to remain anonymous, told VG on Wednesday this has only made everything more complicated and that his infidelity was “hard to forgive, even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world.” She urged:
“I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it. We have had contact and he is aware of my opinions on this. [I am grateful] to my family and friends who have embraced me and supported me during this time. Also to everyone else who has thought of me and sympathized, without knowing who I am.”
Sounds like his plan backfired… and he knows it!
Sturla apologized to his ex-girlfriend and his teammates for his confession on Wednesday in a statement from the Norwegian team shared with People. In it, he said he “deeply regret[s]” discussing the affair “on what was a festive day for Norwegian biathlon.” He continued:
“I am not quite myself today, and I am not thinking clearly. My apologies go to Johan-Olav, who deserved all the attention after the gold. It also goes to my ex-girlfriend, who involuntarily ended up in the media spotlight. I hope she is doing well.”
While he knows he “cannot change” what he’s done, he’s moving forward:
“[I] will now put this behind me and focus on the Olympics. I will not answer any further questions about this.”
Damn.
He took his shot and widely missed… Poor guy must really be going through it. Let that be a reminder to everyone to think about what you’ve got before ruining it all!
