Gary from Chicago was living his best life on Sunday night: a surprise appearance at the Oscars, kisses with the likes of Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, a selfie with Mahershala Ali, and even an impromptu marriage ceremony with Denzel Washington!

ICYMI, Jimmy Kimmel brought out a bunch of unsuspecting tourists from a Hollywood bus tour into the Dolby Theater for a front row ticket to the star-studded affair — and the audience instantly fell in love with Gary and his fianc├â┬⌐e Vickie (and their desire to document every single second).
Gary even got some sweet offers from the appearance:

Well, it turns out the beloved Gary just got out of a California prison last week after serving 20 years for multiple felonies… one including “attempted rape by force or fear” for which the 59-year-old is a registered sex offender, according to DailyMail.com.
Eeeep.
Gary told ABC7 that he found his bride-to-be Vickie and religion while serving time all these years:
“Change is possible. It’s a sad day to be in prison for 20 years and not be able to be a dad, granddad to your children. You know what my son told me today, man, and I almost come to tears. He said he’s proud of me. So to hear your children say that they’re proud of me means the world to me.”
We really didn’t see this one coming… Sigh.
