“Plus-size” is a controversial term for people and models alike!
Tyra Banks wants to ban the term, model Robyn Lawley agrees, and now even more celebs are speaking out about the matter!
For instance, designer Isaac Mizrahi and David Hasselhoff’s model daughter Hayley were recently interviewed separately on the topic.
When Isaac was asked if Project Runway will ever feature contestants who design for “plus-sizes”, he thought it was a great idea!
He also added:
“I don’t want to speak to a plus-sized woman differently than I speak to a woman. I don’t like segregation, I like incorporation, I like integration. If you’re going to do clothes, you need to do them in a whole size range.”
Makes sense!
Then from the model’s perspective, Hayley Hasselhoff had some news for people who claim “plus-size” models glamorize obesity.
She explained:
├óΓé¼┼ôWe’re fit, we’re healthy, we eat right, we work out. Plus-size model does not mean that we├óΓé¼Γäóre not healthy. Plus-size is not glamorizing obesity: it├óΓé¼Γäós about empowering. The message behind the fashion is feeling confident in whatever you├óΓé¼Γäóre wearing. The plus-size movement is not just about fashion, it’s about body image and if we’re doing a shoot, they won’t retouch as at all. That’s the cool thing: there’s no retouching at all because we want to give girls the truth, not a fabrication.├óΓé¼┬¥
The 21-year-old went on to explain how the fashion industry works in terms of models — something she’s been familiar with since she began modeling at age 14:
├óΓé¼┼ôWhat people need to realise is that on the runway it├óΓé¼Γäós a totally different situation. For campaigns there should be different shapes and sizes and I’m not saying that there shouldn├óΓé¼Γäót be for the runway, but that├óΓé¼Γäós to see the fashions. It├óΓé¼Γäós not to see the models, it├óΓé¼Γäós to see the clothes. Plus-sized fashion represents a woman├óΓé¼Γäós figure. The message behind every brand that’s plus-size is about making a woman feel confident in any shape or size. Now straight-size, it├óΓé¼Γäós all about the signature brand and how to look good in that one brand, and not necessarily how to look good for yourself.├óΓé¼┬¥
What an interesting and fresh perspective!
We like what BOTH Isaac and Hayley have to say on the matter.
But what about you… where do YOU stand on the matter?
