Prince Harry Says His Late Mother Princess Diana Would Be Thrilled That He's Raising His Kids In The US

Prince Harry is grateful he’s been able to put down roots in the United States — and his late mother would be, too, he says.

The Duke of Sussex has been in the headlines over the last 24 hours for his appearance at the DealBook Online Summit put on by the New York Times and moderated by columnist and DealBook founder Andrew Ross Sorkin on Wednesday. As we’ve already reported, the 40-year-old directly (and very uncomfortably) addressed persistent divorce rumors that just keep popping up around him and wife Meghan Markle no matter what they try to do to silence the split claims.

During the DealBook chat, Harry also spoke about a few other major topics. Most notably came comments on raising his and Meghan’s children, son Prince Archie, 5, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 3, in the United States. When Sorkin asked him on stage at the summit whether he wants to stay in the US amid endlessly ongoing safety concerns in the United Kingdom, Harry very quickly dropped an “I do” in response. Pretty clear! Then, per People, he added:

“I very much enjoy living here and bringing my kids up here. It’s a part of my life that I never thought I was going to live.”

Not only that, Harry pivoted to openly talking about his late mother and what he believes she would think about his current lifestyle at the Sussex fam home in Montecito:

“I feel as though it’s the life that my mom wanted for me. To be able to do the things I’m able to do with my kids that I undoubtedly wouldn’t be able to do in the U.K. — it’s huge. That is a fantastic opportunity and I’m hugely grateful for that.”

Awww.

Elsewhere in the chat, Harry actually spoke about his mother a bit more, too. As we noted in our aforementioned reporting early on Thursday morning, Prince William‘s estranged brother had lots to say about disinformation in the media:

“I’ve seen stories written about myself not exactly based in reality. When you grow up with that environment, you find yourself questioning the validity of the information, but also what other people are thinking as well, and how dangerous it can be over the course of time. I think again, when you are kind of trapped within this bubble, it kind of feels like there’s no way out.”

But it turns out there was an added component to that on-stage thought, too! In front of Sorkin and the entire audience there in NYC at the DealBook summit, Harry went on to add how scared he was that the media attention and disinformation thrust upon his mother during her life would potentially be thrown onto his and Meghan’s family, too:

“What happened to my mom and the fact that I was a kid and felt helpless, there comes the inner turmoil. I felt helpless. One of my biggest weaknesses is feeling helpless. What worried me most was worrying that would happen to me, or to my wife, or to my kids.”

So sad, and so scary for him as a parent — and a royal. Clearly, it seems like the move to California has paid off in allowing Harry’s family some semblance of privacy that appears to be better than what he’d receive back in the UK.
