Boxing Gloves: Does Size Matter?

Boxing can be a competitive sport or just a great way to blow off steam and stay in shape. To get the best results it’s always better to have the best gear.

FitPerez reader Dennis J wrote our favorite boxer, Alex Brenes, for some expert advice on choosing the right boxing gloves for his size and purposes, asking:

Hi Alex,

Firstly, thank you for helping me.

I am a 6 ft 170lb man. I have been using Boxing Gloves from a local sports store and working out in my garage.

Do you know if there are certain sizes of gloves for my weight / size?

Great question! According to Alex:

You are welcome D!

You are in pretty good shape according to your size and weight, so keep it up bro. Glove sizes for competitions change. Minimum weights up to middleweights use 8 ounce gloves to fight, while those above middleweight use 10 ounce gloves to fight.

For training purposes, the idea is to get faster and stronger with heavier gloves. So for sparring, use a 16 ounce set for minimum to middleweights and an 18 ounce set for the larger weights. For bag or pad work use 12 or 14 ounce gloves.

Hope this helps, now keep your hands up, chin down and hit it!!!!
