The royal family just proved that even a century milestone can feel heartbreakingly fresh when love like this is involved.
More than three years after Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, her presence was still front and center as her family came together to mark what would have been her 100th birthday on Tuesday. And honestly, it was equal parts regal and emotional.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla kicked things off just ahead of the big day with a visit to the “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” exhibition at The King’s Gallery inside Buckingham Palace. And yes, it sounds exactly as fabulous as you’d imagine. We’re talking a jaw-dropping collection of over 300 pieces from the late monarch’s wardrobe, including those iconic rainbow coat dresses that basically defined her public image, and her stunning pearl-detailed ivory silk wedding gown from 1947. A fashion queen until the end, clearly!

But the tributes didn’t stop at style. Charles and Camilla made their way to the British Museum for a special viewing of the Queen Elizabeth Memorial, adding a more reflective and historic tone to the day. Later Tuesday evening, the family then reunited at Buckingham Palace for a reception in her honor, with Prince William and Princess Catherine joining the King and Queen for the meaningful gathering.
And let’s talk about Kate for a second, because she absolutely understood the assignment. The Princess of Wales paid tribute in the most subtle yet powerful way by wearing a three-strand pearl necklace, which had of course been a signature staple of the late Queen’s look. So, it wasn’t just fashion, y’all! It was symbolism, too! And longtime royal watchers definitely noticed.

Perhaps the most emotional moment came from King Charles himself, who shared a heartfelt message about his mother’s legacy. In an Instagram video, he reflected on her extraordinary life with words that really hit home:
“Her near century was one of remarkable change, and yet, through each passing decade, through every transformation, she remained constant, steadfast and wholly devoted to the people she served. Millions will remember her for moments of national significance. Many others for a fleeting personal encounter, a smile, a kind word that lifted spirits or for that marvelous twinkle of the eye when sharing a marmalade sandwich with Paddington Bear in the final months of her life.”
So, so touching.
