They don’t call her Queen for nothing!
Queen Latifah was absolutely AH-Mazing in NBC‘s The Wiz and everyone LOVES Empire on Fox!
That’s why we’re pretty excited for the news that the 45-year-old actress has just been cast in Empire co-creator Lee Daniels‘ new TV show being developed for Fox.

The series will focus on the rise of an up-and-coming all-female singing group from Atlanta. In the still untitled show, Latifah will be playing the owner of an Atlanta beauty salon who acts as a mentor to the women in the group!
The drama is the first project to be produced from Daniels’ long-term deal with 20th Century Fox and has also already cast newcomers Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, and Brittany O’Grady as the ladies in the singing group.
Lee spoke with reporters about the show back in August and said that the story is about a white woman named Star who starts a female singing group with two black women. He explained:

“Star is white and she is thrust into a world of blackness. She has a sister who is half black, Simone, and she has a best friend who is black, and they move to Atlanta to form a girls group.”

The creator went on to dish about the inspiration for the show saying:

“It’s based on LaBelle, it’s based on the Supremes, it’s based on TLC, it’s based on Destiny’s Child. Same sort of inspirations, same sort of template when we created Empire.”

Another piece of exciting news is that the music will be created by Swizz Beatz!
While it’s still early in development as the show hasn’t started filming, Fox Television Group‘s Co-Chairman and CEO, Dana Walden, did mention that there’s a possibility for a crossover with Empire saying:

“It’s not inconceivable that the two worlds could cross, but that’s not Lee’s intention. Perhaps down the line there will be some shared DNA, but not heading into the show.”

We don’t have an air date for this new musical drama, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it dropped next fall!
Are you pumped to see Queen back on the small screen?
