A project has been started to train rats in Mozambique to sniff out land mines.
These rats are made to sniff out TNT, and when they do they are given food.
The training process begins when the rats are four weeks old and takes about 9 months to complete.
Detection of mines is very hard and expensive, with rats it is a lot easier to train them. For two people it would take a day to clear a 2,150 square-feet minefield, but if they work with two rats they can sweep it in two hours!
The rats have been very successful, so far they have helped clear almost two million square meters of land in Mozambique.
Wow! Who knew that rats could save lives!!!
