Reese Witherspoon Says Telling Kids They're Bad At Something 'Isn't Mean If It's True'

Reese Witherspoon Ava Phillippe

Reese Witherspoon knows a thing or two about tough love!
The Legally Blonde actress is a momma of three to kids — Ava Phillippe, Deacon Phillippe, and son Tennessee James — and says that the best thing you can do for your children is to tell them when they’re bad at something…
Yup, you read that correctly. She keeps it real!

The 42-year-old recently opened up about her parenting style in an interview with Fast Company, documenting a day in her life.
The sit-down revealed a few of Witherspoon’s go-to Netflix picks (like Queer Eye!) and a personal tidbit on the pressures of parenting:

“I feel like I’m constantly counteracting pressure from the parents who want to make the lives of their kids golden and magical at all moments! Guess what, kids? You’re going to be disappointed and uncomfortable once in a while.”

So true!
The Hello Sunshine media company founder said things aren’t always “golden and magical,” though, referencing an old incident with her doppelganger, 18-year-old Ava. The actress found her daughter crying in bed after a junior varsity basketball game where she didn’t score a single basket. It’s here that she decided a little tough love and brutal honesty would do the most good:

“I said, ‘Aves, maybe you’re bad at basketball.’ She thought that was mean. I said, ‘Mean or true? ‘Cause, guess what? Your mom’s bad at basketball, too.'”

Sounds like that one came from experience! And while Reese might not be crossing you over on the court, at least she knows it and isn’t afraid to keep it real with her kids. Sometimes it’s these moments of brutal honesty that have the lasting impact we really need in life.
