South African music legend, Miriam Makeba, passed away on Monday.
She was 76 years old.
Ms. Makeba was described as ‘a voice who stirred hopes of freedom among millions in her own country, though her music was formally banned by the apartheid authorities she struggled against’.
The songstress died in Italy.
She was singing at a concert in support of Roberto Saviano (an author who has received death threats since writing about Italy’s organized crime) and collapsed as she was leaving the stage, the South African authorities said.
Our thoughts go out to her family, friends and the many fans she inspired around the world.
