The U.S. Justice Department will issue a memo today that will usher in the latest milestone for gay rights!
Same-sex marriages will now be recognized in ALL federal legal matters from coast to coast! That means even in states that have bans on gay marriage, couples who live there will still be permitted to do such things as file for bankruptcy, visit each other in prison or be entitled to survivor benefits.
K, well all of those things are kind of downers, but this is still a MAJOR step towards making marriage equality law in all 50 states!
Attorney General Eric Holder announced the new recognition at Saturday├óΓé¼Γäós Human Rights Campaign’s gala in New York City. He compared his fight for gay rights to the 1960s civil rights movement and then-Attorney General Robert Kennedy├óΓé¼Γäós quest for equality.
Holder said:
“This means that, in every courthouse, in every proceeding, and in every place where a member of the Department of Justice stands on behalf of the United States — they will strive to ensure that same-sex marriages receive the same privileges, protections and rights as opposite-sex marriages under federal law.├óΓé¼┬¥
