This is the last type of film we’d expect to receive a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, but now that it has, it sounds like we may have our first huge break-out hit of the season!
The Sapphires tells the story of four Aboriginal sisters and cousins who form an all-girl singing group and wind up leaving the Australian outback to entertain the troops in Vietnam in 1968, and apparently, when it was screened out of competition over the weekend, the comedy received such a warm reception that even producer Harvey Weinstein is predicting that it’s going to be a full-on smash!
He reveals:
“I’m having such fun with this movie. It’s fun! It got a reception the size of … It was a big reception for a long time. It was amazing…It’s its own thing. I really like these people, and it’s a good story to tell.”
It sounds like Aussie-Dreamgirls, except a comedy featuring the ADORABLE Chris O’Dowd from Bridesmaids!
What ISN’T there to love?!
Hey! Tree of Life had its serious, provacative accolades last year, we think Cannes deserves to put the spotlight on something like THIS this time around!
Especially if it’s as good as we’re hearing!
What do U think?? Do U want to see The Sapphires?!
