Sara Bareilles Reveals Her Experience With Body Shaming & How Her Music Saved A Fan From Suicide In New Tell-All Memoir

Sara Bareilles new book
Singer-songwriter, author, Broadway composer… that’s quite an impressive resum├â┬⌐!
Sara Bareilles is responsible for some of our favorite jams like Love Song and Brave, and now has released a very personal memoir entitled Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) in Song where she opens up about her parents divorce, her struggle with body shaming as a child, and how her music saved a fan from suicide.

In a recent interview, the 35-year-old revealed some of the very important topics she covers in her book, which was a completely different writing experience for her:

“This felt much more laborious [than song writing] so in the end it was incredibly rewarding.”

Her songs are always meaningful, so we are sure the penned pages will not disappoint.
Growing up, the songstress says she was bullied endlessly about her weight — ridicule that she admits still affects her today:

“My greatest struggle is a big part of why I stand onstage. I sing because I was a fat kid. Now, when I look at pictures of myself at that age, I know there was absolutely nothing ‘wrong’ with me at all, but some thoughtless words carved carved out a story that I believed and my body obsession began.”

In a chapter of her experience while on tour, Bareilles recalls a moment during a 2010 Kaleidoscope Heart concert where a fan passed her a gift bag through the crowd containing a heartfelt letter about how the song Hold My Heart stopped her from committing suicide:

“Something in the music connected to her in that moment and stopped her from doing the unthinkable. She changed her mind. She told me her story in a letter instead, and as I read her words, I was moved to tears. The profundity of that kind of sadness, coupled with the power of music, was overwhelming.”

Wow! What a moving story.
The book release isn’t all Bareilles has going on right now. In addition to dropping a new album on November 6, she is working on the musical stage adaptation of Keri Russell‘s movie Waitress, debuting on Broadway this spring.
Holy smokes — that’s one busy lady! Hats off to you, Sara!
