Sarah Silverman dropped a massive bombshell this week about a tragedy in her family…
In a new interview published with Rolling Stone on Sunday, the comedian opened up about something somber — the death of her older brother Jeffrey Silverman. Sarah never knew Jeffrey, who died as a baby, five years before she was even born. For a long time, Sarah said she believed the 3-month-old’s death was a tragic accident. However, she later found out it was anything but.
The story went that Sarah’s parents, Beth and Donald Silverman, left their infant son with her father’s parents while they went on a cruise her mom won on a game show. Sadly, tragedy struck while they were on vacation. Jeffrey passed away after “something happened with the crib,” and his “little body slid and he got suffocated” at her grandparent’s house. That’s what she was always told.

Unfortunately, freak accidents like these can happen. Sarah found the whole explanation odd, though. The Wreck-It Ralph star’s family rarely spoke about Jeffrey, but when her parents did? She knew something was off. While writing her memoir The Bedwetter, she thought it was strange how Beth and Donald had different versions of every single problem in their marriage, but not about what caused her brother’s death. And Sarah pointed out:
“If you look back, there was never a lawsuit with the crib company or anything.”
The School of Rock star eventually learned why. And the story is horrible.
In the interview, the Saturday Night Live alum recalled her dad attending her 2022 stage musical adaptation of The Bedwetter five nights in a row — one year before he passed away. The show featured a scene in which a young Sarah jokes about Jeffrey’s death, and no one laughs. That scene hit her father hard — and eventually pushed Donald to come clean about what happened. After the fifth show, the author remembered her dad came backstage and made a horrific confession:
“My dad says, ‘I always felt that he was crying or something, and my dad shook him. He shook him in a rage and killed him.’”
OMG. Her grandfather “killed” her brother?! And no one said anything until then?! When Donald finally revealed the truth, Sarah wasn’t shocked. Everything actually made sense. She continued:
“As soon as he said it, it was like, ‘Of course, that’s what happened.’ His mother always stood by her husband. She watched him beat the s**t out of her son. I couldn’t ask my mom, because she was dead.”
While many may be upset about how this kind of terrible news was exposed, Sarah was used to her dad’s ways by then. She shared that he was “always dropping bombs,” adding:
“That was my dad. We were playing poker once, and he just dropped in that one of the priests at his school fondled him. I was like ‘Dad!’”
Jeez! Sometimes when you bottle up trauma, the bottle just breaks.
We can’t believe how long the family kept this huge secret though. So heartbreaking. Reactions, Perezcious readers? Let us know in the comments.
