Remember when Selena Gomez seemingly disappeared from the world during her social media hiatus last September?
The Wolves singer has been inching her way back into the public eye over the past few months, and returned to platforms like Instagram in January.
But the star also recently revealed that she still isn’t a big fan of social media and what it’s doing to this generation!

The 26-year-old singer spoke about the danger of using apps like Twitter and IG at a press conference for the Cannes Film Festival in France on Wednesday. Selly made the rare public appearance to promote director Jim Jarmusch’s film, The Dead Don’t Die.
Speaking to the press, she candidly admitted:
“I think our world is going through a lot. I would say, for my generation, specifically, social media has really been terrible. It does scare me when you see how exposed these young boys and young girls are and they’re not really aware of the news or anything going on. I think it’s dangerous for sure. I don’t think people are getting the right information sometimes.”
Referencing how she deals with her own staggering following of 150 million followers on IG, she continued:
“I think it’s pretty impossible to make it safe at this point. I’m grateful I have the platform. I don’t do a lot of pointless pictures. For me, I like to be intentional with it. It just scares me. I’ll see these young girls at meet and greets. They are devastated, dealing with bullying and not being able to have their own voice. It can be great in moments. I would be careful and allow yourself some time limits of when you should use it.”

We have to say, Gomez is absolutely right about social media being a bittersweet entity at times. She’s hardly the first person to speak out about it too, as her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber recently slammed the press and scolded rabid fans online for spreading misinformation that put completely false Jelena speculations back into the conversation.
After fans were convinced that the Biebs was still creeping on his ex based on his exposed computer search history of Selena’s Coachella performance, he defended himself saying:
“Please stop reading into things so much and making something out of nothing. The point of the video was supposed to be funny that they were saying I walked out on Hailey and they spelled my name wrong this idea that I secretly plot on opening my history thing purposefully and zoom out just enough so you can see her name is crazy. These are real lives you guys are talking about real emotions stop acting like you know anything about anything.. go to school read your books and focus on your own personal life.”
It sounds like both celebs want their followers to be more mindful about the information they’re consuming and how they’re behaving online, for everyone’s sake! And tbh, we couldn’t agree more.
As for Selena, we can assume the starlet will continue to be cautious and selective about how much she shares about her lifestyle going forward. After being notably absent from the 2019 Met Gala, a source shared with ET that she’s staying away from “the pressure and expectations of being under a microscope” right now. And considering all of that Jelena drama we just told you about, we wouldn’t be surprised if another social media hiatus was on the horizon either…
