Déjà vu!
Selena Gomez was criticized (and asked to apologize) for wearing a bindi during her Come and Get It performance last month at the MTV Movie Awards, but that didn’t stop her from wearing it again at every subsequent performance, including at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night.
And once again, Selenita’s Bollywood-inspired routine at the BMAs has offended Hindu groups and leaders, who have called it “insensitive” and accused the singer of diminishing the bindi’s religious significance.
We think that if cultural leaders have explained why the matter is disrespectful and asked that Selena stop wearing a bindi, maybe it’s in good taste to comply with their wishes.
In fact, the bindi was conspicuously absent from Selena’s official video for the song, and Hindu groups PRAISED the 20-year-old for keeping the bindi out of the video.
Seems like a giant step back to us.
