We’re not sure what reaction we were expecting, but this is much more emotional than we anticipated.
It’s been 17 years since Hae Min Lee was murdered, and over a year since Serial‘s first season examining the case wrapped.
But the victim’s family only just spoke publicly for the first time this week.
If you’ve heard of the popular This American Life podcast Serial, then you’re probably aware that Adnan Syed is currently serving a life sentence in prison for strangling his girlfriend Hae back in 1999.

Well, similarly to the developments coming from Netflix‘s Making a Murderer, the doubts cast on the trial due to Sarah Koenig‘s investigation seem to be making a case for a retrial for Adnan… much to the dismay of Hae’s family and friends.
In fact, at the hearing for the potential retrial in Baltimore Circuit Court on Wednesday, the family issued a statement to Deputy Maryland Attorney General Thiru Vignarajah, saying:
“[Serial has forced] us to relive a nightmare we thought was behind us.
Our family has lived without a heart for over 17 years. And we continue to grieve every day in private. We are grateful to all the people who are there and will be there to support and to give Hae a voice; She is the true victim.
We believe justice was done when Adnan was convicted in 2000, and we look forward to bringing this chapter to an end so we can celebrate the memory of Hae instead of celebrating the man who killed her.”
Whether they listened to the podcast or not, it’s clear Hae’s family is still positive Adnan is guilty.
The now-36-year-old was originally found guilty of premeditated murder back in 2000, but now a new witness who claims to have been with Adnan just 30 minutes before Hae was last seen is coming forward to testify… and could very well lead to his freedom due to how poorly the first trial was handled.
