Mexico City commuters were surprised to find a new fixture installed on a subway car that gave a whole new meaning to the term “riding the tube.”
UN Women and Mexico City authorities have put in temporary “penis seats” in select cars to highlight sexual harassment endured by female passengers on the reg.

The seats were garnished with a protruding mold of a man’s chest and penis and include a sign that reads “exclusively for men.”
This effort is part of a city-wide campaign called #NoEsDeHombres, which aims to highlight sexual harassment on public transportation — and direct the awareness to men.
The phallic mold was designed with the goal for men to feel “discomfort” while sitting on them. A sign underneath the seat reads:
“It is uncomfortable to sit here, but that is nothing compared to the sexual violence that women suffer on their daily journeys.”
Though sexual violence against women on public transportation occurs worldwide, the problem has been ever-growing for the women of Mexico City — which was ranked the worst in verbal and physical harassment on public transit worldwide in 2014.

The stunt was met with mixed criticism. While many supported the effort for shining a spotlight on a swelling problem, others saw the seats as “sexist” and unfair to the men who don’t sexually harass women on the subway.

Not everyone was throbbing with enthusiasm, however.
