Shia LaBeouf knows he screwed up when it comes to his marriage to Mia Goth.
The 39-year-old actor opened up about their breakup for the first time in an interview on Channel 5 With Andrew Callaghan on Saturday. As we previously reported, following his arrest for simple battery after a brawl during Mardi Gras in New Orleans last month, news broke that the pair secretly separated about a year ago. Insiders claimed Mia and Shia had “a lot of drama” and “they weren’t getting along” last year, so they went their separate ways.
Now we are hearing in his own words what went wrong. The Transformers alum started by owning up to failing their marriage:
“I feel like it’s not new heartbreak. You know, it’s heartbreak. I don’t want to talk too much about it. It’s not my story alone to tell, but my side is, you know, I failed my marriage and so I had to own up to that.”
According to Shia, they were also simply “unhappy.” He explained:
“We were deeply unhappy. I made a lot of mistakes early on before we tried to have a baby. I had violated trust in a big, big way. We tried … to fix it, and it was impossible, and we both became very unhappy. And it’s not good to be unhappy around a baby. It’s not good to be unhappy around kids. But it’s important to be proximate. You must be around. And this became quite a weird Tetris.”
The Even Stevens star stressed he couldn’t “speak too much about” their split. However, despite no longer being with Mia, he has nothing but good things to say about her. He gushed:
“That’s a good girl. That’s one of the best girls that ever lived. She’s incredible, that woman. Incredible … all the time. 10 out of 10.”
Shia insisted they “are good as is” with “nothing” to “repair” — so it sounds like they are heading for divorce! No reconciliation again for them! He continued:
“We’re in a good spot. I mean, this isn’t new. … We’ve been there for a while, we’re trying to figure out co-parenting, and we’re good. Even through all this, she gives me grace.”
The Honey Boy star shared that he “still talk[s] to [his] kid twice a day,” adding:
“Any other woman would be like, ‘Yo, f**k you, get out of here! I don’t want to talk to you!’ She don’t do that to me … even when things are hanky.”
Shia is focused on trying to “rebuild” in New Orleans, but we all know it has been a bumpy ride so far. For now, he isn’t worried about custody of their 3-year-old daughter:
“[Goth is] going to film in France. I’ve got to film in April. So I got some time where I’m gonna run out there and be dad for a minute while Mommy’s gotta film. … We’re the circus family.”
At least the two can co-parent amicably! We’ll see how long that lasts, however, if Shia continues to stir up trouble in New Orleans! Watch the interview (below):
