A group of Silicon Valley tech head honchos are banding together for the sake of education.
The group, whose supporters include Steve Jobs’ widow Laurene Powell Jobs, is trying to pass The Dream Act. The Dream Act is a legislation which would essentially help undocumented students go to college, get jobs and eventually, get legalized.
Palm Pilot inventor and organization member Jeff Hawkins explains:
“We have these kids who grew up here, went to school here. They’re American kids, they have no other home and essentially we’re abandoning them. They have a hard time getting an education and they have no prospects for work.”
The group’s work benefits Educators for Fair Consideration (E4FC) in providing different programs to undocumented students, such as scholarships and internships and already has an operating budget of $600,000.
Executive Director Katharine Gin states:
“A lot of us were telling these students: ‘Just get through college and we’ll worry about the rest later,'” Gin said. “Now people are trying to figure out what we can do, trying to figure out something meaningful if we can’t trust that immigration reform is going to happen.”
It is SO important that education should benefit ALL American students!!! We are glad these technology leaders are stepping up to the plate and using their resources to help these kids!
