Sofia Vergara Beat Thyroid Cancer At 28

Sofia Vergara
And for that, we thank the heavens because Sofia Vergara is a gift to television viewers everywhere!
The seksi actress and star of ABC’s hit show, Modern Family, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at just 28-years-old.
During an interview on Thursday’s Nightline, she talked about the health scare, saying:

“I was very young and when they tell you that word…you always think ‘death’; that’s all you think when they tell you that, so it was pretty scary.”

Just seconds later, she’s able to laugh about it with incredible optimism. When questioned about her almost superhuman ability to stay positive after such a traumatic past that includes a murdered brother and another addicted to drugs, she exclaims:

“I have to! Can you imagine if I stayed at home and think of all the things that have happened? I’d be paralyzed in bed.”

However, Sofia wasn’t always so open about her illness. In an older interview, before becoming a TV superstar, she explained that she initially kept the diagnosis a secret, saying:

“I didn├óΓé¼Γäót want publicity because of that. Having cancer is not fun. You don├óΓé¼Γäót want to deal with anything else while you├óΓé¼Γäóre going through it.”

After a doctor found a lump on her neck during an appointment meant for her son, Sofia underwent a risky surgery to remove her thyroid gland, explaining:

“I felt no symptoms, so I was skeptical about having my thyroid gland removed. Plus, the surgery is dangerous. If the doctor makes a mistake, you can lose your speech, or the mobility in your face. But I did it.”

She beat cancer and now she’s on top of the world, but candidly admits her past has played a large role in her future, adding:

“When you go through something like this, it├óΓé¼Γäós hard, but you learn a lot from it. Your priorities change. You don├óΓé¼Γäót sweat the small stuff. And it had a good ending.”

An ending that allowed her to go on and have a wildly successful career in Hollywood that is showing no sign of slowing down anytime soon.
