Four young children were fatally stabbed in a Memphis, Tennessee apartment complex and their mother has been taken into custody.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, officials were called to the Greens at Irene Apartment complex shortly before 1 p.m. on Friday.
All four children — who were all under the age of 6 — have died from the injuries.

The father is being held at the scene, but local authorities say he was not in the home at the time of the attack.
Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham said of the incident:
“One of the most difficult questions in any investigation always is ‘Why?’ It’s a tragic scene and one that shocked us to our core. Our community has suffered an egregious act of evil and tremendous loss today.”
Since deputies are currently working to notify the next of kin, they will not release the identities of the children at this time.
Oldham said that the investigation is in an early stage and it is not yet known if the mother had any mental health issues.
