Star Wars: The Force Awakens Reaches $1 Billion Box Office At Record Speed — Find Out WHO Is Giving It Record Ticket Sales!
The seventh installment of the space adventure just earned $1 billion at the box office, and completed the feat with record-breaking speed!
Disney announced that The Force Awakens reached the billion dollar mark on Sunday, after only 12 days in theaters!
The last movie to reach $1 billion at similar speed was Jurassic World, which reached the same mark in 13 days back in June. But Universal‘s dinosaur adventure had the benefit of record earning in China — whereas Star Wars won’t be opening in the world’s second-largest movie market until January 9!
Disney distribution president Dave Hollis said that repeat viewings and more mass appeal — especially to women and families — is a huge reason more tickets have sold, explaining:
“The speed with which records are falling is a testament to the audience broadening out. And you can’t do these kind of numbers without extraordinary repeat business. We know anecdotally people are seeing it three and four times. Everyone wants to be part of something that has become a cultural phenomenon.”
The Force Awakens also made history with the biggest Christmas Day box office, earning $49.9 million — and unsurprisingly took the top spot in the box office its second week with $153.5 million.
In second place landed comedy Daddy’s Home, opening with $38.8 million. Taking third place was the Jennifer Lawrence drama Joy, which debuted with $17.5 million!
While analysts still aren’t sure if The Force Awakens can surpass Avatar‘s record global gross of $2.8 billion, but if the force has been pretty unstoppable so far — so anything is possible!
