Stolen Things?? Lawsuit Claims Duffer Brothers Ripped Off Stranger Things From THIS Short Film!
But no, the man claiming the duo stole his idea is named Charlie Kessler, creator of award-winning short film Montauk.
In his suit, TMZ reports Kessler claims in 2014 he pitched the Duffers the idea for a TV series version of the short, which also involved mysterious events and secret government experiments. He says they used his ideas, story, and script and even sold it under the name The Montauk Project.
While it’s true the original ST pilot was sold under the name Montauk, and was intended to take place in Montauk, New York rather than the fictional everytown of Hawkins, Indiana, that’s about the only similarity we can see.
The generic found footage film certainly has no style, visuals, characters, or nostalgia trips in common with the Netflix show — but don’t take our word for it! You can watch the whole thing (below) and see if you agree!
Kessler is demanding money for damages AND destruction of ripped off materials — meaning presumably the cancellation of Stranger Things├óΓé¼ΓÇ╣ so… let’s hope the judge sees it the same way as us.
