If they were smart, L.A. would just take over the whole damn festival. It would be a win-win for everyone.
There’s a good chance that the Sunset Junction Festival won’t be happening next weekend. It seems this morning, the city’s Board of Public Works denied the festival the proper permits to allow the staging in Silver Lake. Three hours of back-and-forth could not convince the board to vote in favor of allowing organizers to have a permit without paying the $140,000 requested by the city for municipal services such as police protection.
Thing is, the organizers still owe the city money from last year’s festival and since they haven’t paid that back yet and don’t have all the money to cover this year, the board voted against them. The legal team tried to persuade the city to allow them to pay the fee after the festival, but the city wasn’t having it.
It’s a shame because the people who really lose out on this is the community. Music fans really look forward to this every year and it generates a lot of business for local restaurants and shops and hotels and what have.
Seriously, L.A. needs to step in and take this over. Give the community back its event while taking control of the financial side completely, Stimulate that economy some, huh?!
Here’s hoping a deal can be reached by Wednesday when they have another meeting.
